My foreign policy analysis work focuses on environmental issues, specifically thus far on climate change negotiations and energy security. My larger manuscript project analyses foreign policy decision making in the Americas in regards to ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. Case studies include the United States, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela. My work highlights which factors (individual, domestic or international) most influenced a country’s decision to ratify.

Another project (with Jenifer Whitten-Woodring) looks at the role media play in forming US climate change foreign policy. Using a content analysis of New York Times articles and congressional hearings and a time series analysis we argue that media draw connection frames between extreme weather events and climate change which in turn affect congressional discussions on the issue.

A newer line of research focuses on the formulation of US energy security policy.
